Recall : Honda & Toyota
Me and the Pussy Lover were heading for an appointment in JB this morning when we overheard this news on the road.Honestly, I have not been following the issues of the recall by both Honda and Toyota as it don't really concern out rides.
How does this recall system works? Seem everything originates from the US right? So if the particular manufacturer has no recall is it really good? I care not to go into details on how all this recall system work out, most probably the debate will never be end, too many if and maybes.
So I got some time and manage to look at what the whooha is about with the recall for Toyota and Honda. In particular I find the recall pertaining "unintended acceleration" for Toyota interesting. Let me summarize this without going into detail and statistic.
Definition : Sudden unintended acceleration is the unintended, unexpected, uncontrolled acceleration of a vehicle from a stationary position, low initial speed or at cruising speed — combined with an apparent loss of braking effectiveness.
Least to say, this will affect automatic cars, where the car will simply move or accelerate on its own, locally refer to as "hantu". Initially the blame that on the carpet, they recall and change the carpet, then they blame it on the pedal mechanism not working properly and also they point fingers to the software as well..
If we look closely at all the models involve in the recall, most probably we notice that these models are all on electronic throttle. Toyota is not the only manufacture that have this problem, it seem that a few other manufacturers also have the same problem.
I prefer to look at this issue in the macro sense and going to the actual source - e-throttle. E-throttle some says more responsive, FC friendly but after reading about the recall, I'm pretty glad my Optra is still on the good old technology of using cable to open and close the throttle.

Quite right there, where QC is concern is more on finishing such as seats, radio and facia, paint job and all the accessories. The recall is base on something that occur over time.

Since we are still on this topic, the QC here is subjective. All cars will go through QC but when you mentioned R & D, that's a different ball game. How you put a QC on R & D is beyond me. As in R & D, there is no 100% gurantee that the product will turn out right. Take for e.g., your home DVD or even your mobile phone, no matter what the product will break down given over a period of time.
Why a product break down? It can be due to a number of factors such as climate, environment, usage and etc. A R & D team can never simulate test under all conceive situation, because it can be too expensive or too time consuiming and by the time they complete the testing, the product will be obsolete.
In the instance of motor vehicle, lives are involve, a recall is inevitable. Furthermore political prodding will also play a part when a manufacturer does a recall. If you can find time, do a search on the internet on Chevrolet Aveo, you be surprise by the recall that this particular model has and not forgetting the service bulletine as well. Some of the fault mentioned is something that you may have encountered before on your car and are known issues.
