Batteries are almost a necessity in our daily lives, at one point or another we are always hunting for one to replace the battery on the wall clock or for that electric shaver what not. I have previously purchase many rechargeable batteries that come with charger and somehow or rather chuck them aside. My new DSLR uses normal AA batery instead of dedicated battery, thus my need for good battery charger and batteries as these are high power requirement equipment.

As usual did a research on the net for a suitable one and the name Maha pop up several times, check out their site and the products they have and surprisingly it's sold in Singapore. I decided to opt for their smart charger the MH-C9000, this slow trickle charger is capable of charging 4 AA or 4AAA batteries and come with backlit LCD display.

There are five modes of operation from Charge, Refresh & Analyze, Break-in, Discharge and Cycle with 19 selectable charging current from 0.2A to 2.0A and 10 selectable discharging current from 0.1A to 1.0A. The charger comes with 4 free Imedion (by Maha) 2100 mAh rechargeable batteries, adapter for the local socket and a manual. The manual is simple but informative to include a section on "General Battery Education" . If you are the type that's fussy and want the maximum for what you pay for your rechargeable batteries, this is the one for you. The five modes of operation will allow you to break-in a new set of batteries, this will do a charge, discharge and rest cycle which should condition your battery for longer usage.

The Refresh & Analyze mode will performed "Battery Matching", this is useful if you have a bunch of batteries and don't know what state your batteries are in, set to this mode to perform grouping because in most devices, you need at least 2 batteries and when they are use in series the performance is limited by the worst one or one poorly performing battery can significantly reduce the device runtime. The other advantage is that tyou can also "revive" those batteries that you have not charge for a long time. As in new batteries if they are stored for extended period, they become chemically deactivated. This is what is known as Battery "forming" and to activate it you can perform a charge and discharge cycle for two or three times which will force a full charge at a slow rate, this process will activate the batteries.

The Imedion batteries that come free with this charger as claim by Maha retain a charge longer, even after 1 year of non usage, these batteries can retain up to 85% of their charge. This charger also can be use either for 240v or 110v without the use of a step down/up transformer so will come in handy if you need to travel for prolong period, all you need is to get the adapter suitable to the country you are travelling but this is no compact device and I doubt you will bring along with you on a short trip.

Adding from my FIR, just did a Battery Break in for my new set of Imedion, and it's still breaking in - 16 hour charge, 1 hour rest 6 hour discharge and now starting the final charge, another 16 hours. Tiring, but at least it will prepare and condition this new battery, the entire process should terminate around Sunday night at 9 pm. The process started at around 4 am on Saturday morning, once I have done the break in, the next time all I need to do is just charge the battery. Very Happy

It's not a toy, and there is a difference between a quick charger and a trickle charger, I suggest you go find out the difference first before you are being " misled ".
