Re: gps navigation unit
Some tips on getting a GPS unit.
The GPS is as good as the map that comes with it. Important thing when choosing the device, it must have good processor and the best is the the SIRF III chipset. The rest all highly dependent on the software that run the map.
We don't have software that's as good as the one in the F & F. Not even close, that's takes alot of A.I. and mostly it's in the movie and it's BS.
For your usage, I would recommend that you get the device here but when choosing a map, get those dedicated for Malaysia, otherwise the Ulu places also your GPS cannot locate. So it's not the GPS ya but more on the mapping software fault.

been doing some homework on this GPS thingy. Generally, the good ones with overall good reviews are Garmin, Holux, Marbella. Price is quite standard as practically all 4.3" size are priced at $399. Garmin is well known and has good resale value. Go for the Garmin Nuvi 205W. The latest one 255W has this function "junction view". But this is only available if you buy the local ones. The export US ones do not have this function. The latest Holux 62 is very slim and attractive. Marbella allows you to loan maps if you need to travel. You'll need to explore and see what you need in the GPS. There are others like Packard Bell, Shinco etc.
In addition to the basic stuff like voice guide, some comes with bluetooth and even FM transmitter. This would allow you to have the voice guide transmitted to your head unit and your speakers. If you need a GPS, at least get the 4.3" type. Anything smaller would be inconvenient. Also check what maps comes with the GPS. They should at least have a S'pore Map and Malaysia Map. Most used the Mapking type. Good or not, I'm not really sure. I'm still searching for the "ideal " set. Missed the offer at Courts over the weekend as was still undecided. They were offering Shinco 5.0" at $399 with 2 year-Mapking S'pore & Malaysia maps. For a 5.0" GPS this is good value as most will cast between $500-$600. Incidentally, Mapking S'pore map is also by LTA so it's very updated. Happy hunting for the ideal GPS set...

Find out the model no. As far as i know Holux doesn't have a 5" GPS. Must be the 4.3" Holux 62. In that case, it's normal price. Maybe can get cheaper at Sim Lim. There's this shop known for the slightly cheaper price of GPS, First Watch (i think).

Apologies but when you're on specific on details like model no. etc, difficult to confirm anything. Anyway, did a check and yes there is a 5" model but price i'm not sure. If it's really at $399 as reported then it's a good buy. The Holux GPSmile 61 is not too bad also but it's a smaller 4.3" screen.

Re: gps navigation unit
Btw, for those looking for a GPS unit, look for one that has at least 400mhz processor. This would enable fast reroute (almost instant) when you make a wrong turn. Anything slower will take forever. So if you're thinking of getting a used GPS check the specs. Cheers.
