Big Sisters Big Brothers of Greater Virginia Peninsula
Big Sisters Big Brothers is an organization that has been providing help to children to cope up with difficulties in life like abuse and abandonment. They have provided children with hope to live a better future. They provide mentors to children who guide them in the right way. A lot of effort is put in to pair the right child with the right mentor.
Big Sisters Big Brothers of Greater Virginia Peninsula have partnered with NASA Langley Research Center, the Newport News Police Department and the Virginia Air and Space Center to provide mentor children at Newsome Park Elementary through their Afterschool program. The program began with the intention of involving the News Port Police Chief in the Southeast Community and as a way to give back. An activity is hosted with the students each week by a representative from NASA Langley, the Police Department or the Air and Space Center. They work towards reinforcing what students are learning in the classroom by alternating each week. Leadership training and character development classes are also provided by them.
Topics like character development, self-esteem and leadership training are imbibed in the children by the Police Department. NASA Langley and the Virginia Air and Space Center conduct activities for students that focus on science. The activities are hands-on and are interactive. A volunteer mentor is paired with each student. The mentor interacts with the student by listening to how his day was, helping him with his homework, playing with him, etc.
