If you're not too confident to go fully manual, can try aperture priority mode - you choose f-stop, camera decides the shutter speed or shutter priorty - you choose shutter speed, camera decide on aperture. Try them out to see the results. Eg, if you're shooting portrait and want a blurred (bokeh) background, use bigger f-stop (f5.6 or bigger). To get everything in focus use smaller f-stop (f8 or smaller), you can use aperture priority for such situations. Have fun experimenting...
